Should Really Try to Sleep Tonite...

Today I did the last MacMedia edits that I will ever do in my life. Sigh. Thus ends another chapter in my life. I picked up my alarm clock too. I don't need it in the office anymore, and I sure as hell need it back at home. My old one just isn't doing its job anymore. It's time to put it out to pasture. Y'know. Like a horse.

I'm debating whether or not to take back my faux bear-skin rug. I mean, it's such a MacMedia icon now, I feel it's my duty to donate to the office. It would seem pretty backhanded to take it back after two years. But on the other hand, it was gift from Mike and Priscilla. A joke gift. But a gift nonetheless.

I finally got my Common CD back from Marcus. Which is good, cuz the concert is next Friday. I should know some of the new songs, ya know? Saw Jimmy at Marcus' house and had a smoke. Jimmy's always a good smoke partner. I'll have a smoke with him even when I'm in non-smoking phase.

Priscilla's party is tomorrow. I gotta admit, I'm kinda nervous. I'm getting into my pre-depression, anti-social phase again. But I'll post about that another day. But I'm determined to not let my self fall into the funk I did last time. So I'm forcing myself to party. Which is good. Two years ago, I would've avoided this gathering like oil and water...but not this time. I'm gonna conquer this thing. Even if I do become depressed again, I refuse to push away my friends like I did last time.

But whatever. Haha, that sounds depressing, even though I'm pretty happy right now.

Hey Jimmy! Cheer up buddy. Let's have a smoke.

Chris might not be able to come tomorrow so she can work on her essay...so that means I'll have to find alternate means of transportation. Ben?

Okay, so I've decided to make a different site for my movie reviews and shit like that. The link is on the side (hopefully...if I still remember my HTML). I'll probably post a lot of my old MacMedia stuff, so expect a lot of old reviews before the new stuff starts coming.

I Never Saw the Sun...

Fuck, so last night I couldn't get to sleep until 6 am. Which means I woke up today at like 2:45 (pm, in case that didn't make sense). Fuuuck. I had breakfast at 3 in the afternoon. By the time I looked outside for the first time, the sun was already setting. Depressing.

I should've started my essay research today. I turned on my VCR and popped in Save the Last Dance...but I couldn't bring myself to press "play". I mean, who wants to watch Save the Last Dance anyways? Even if it *is* for school...

Instead I watched PRIDE Fighting on satellite. Fucking crazy show, man. Tons of upsets. Anderson Silva beat Carlos Newton with a jumping knee to the face (brutal!). Quinton Jackson beat Kevin Randalman with a mean knee, right upper-cut, left-hook combo. And the craziest upset of the night, Elvis beat Sakuraba! Sakurba!!!! Saks was dominating the whole fight, like, total domination, when he rushed in and tried to trap Elvis' forearms and go for his neck (possibly for a takedown). Elvis pulled back, and while doing so, came up with a knee that landed smack on Sakuraba's face. It was over from there. I almost cried.

Man, in case you can't tell. I miss martial arts. Cobra came into Starbucks a couple of weeks ago and asked if I wanted to train with him during the summer. I just might take him up on that. I need to get in shape first though, man. My belly is soft and slushy now. I look like fukkin E.T.

My mom was really cool about Christianne sleeping over, so that went over nicely. I'm thinking about e-mailing my sister, I don't know why. Can it be that I miss her? Sure, I still hate her, but is it possible that I miss her too? Can you miss somebody you despise? Ah, of course you can...

Fuck, can somebody remind me that I have to give George his damn CD back before the school year is over? I feel bad, I keep avoiding the guy's calls. George is a good guy. One of the few people I've met in York that I would actually hang out with outside of York-time. But he keeps giving me cigarettes, the little bastard.

Anyways, I'm out. Gonna make some tea.

Oh The Angst!

I'm trying come up with the words to describe my mood...but they say that a picture is worth a thousand words....so here goes:

Movie Reviews

FROM OUT OF THE DARK – Far From Heaven

First, a minor point of contention: Far From Heaven got robbed at the Oscars. Elmer Bernstein should have won Best Musical Score, Julianne Moore should have won Best Actress, and the film itself should have garnered a nomination for Best Picture (maybe not a win, but at least a nomination, dammit). But I digress. Bitching about the Oscars is like bitching about the weather—nothing will change, and nobody really cares what you have to say about it anyway.

Directed by Todd Haynes, Far From Heaven is a love story that takes place in the historical and cinematic 1950s. Narratively, Eisenhower is President, men are Company Men, and homosexuality and inter-racial romance exist only as urban myths and far-out gossip. Cinematically, the film is shot and scored like early Hollywood noir and “women’s films” or “weepies”. In it, a company bigwig (Dennis Quaid) and his house wife (Julianne Moore) enjoy a Leave it to Beaver-ish marriage, complete with two incredibly intelligent and loyal children, supportive neighbors, and more toothy smiles and perfect hair than you’d see in a shampoo commercial.

The film is able to resurrect the old-Hollywood style and archetypes, while still crafting a story full of real characters with real emotions. The movie is flashy and overtly stylistic, but here the style serves the substance. When Cathy (Julianne Moore) catches her previously sitcom-perfect husband, Frank (Dennis Quaid), in the embraces of another man, the swelling melodramatic score and harsh noir-ish lighting use the conventions of 1950s suspense to let us feel just how deviant these acts were once-upon-a-time perceived.

Once part of a pristine, cookie-cutter, Technicolor nuclear family, Cathy and Frank’s world tears apart beneath the visual perfection. Frank discovers he is homosexual and Cathy develops romantic feelings towards a local black man, Raymond Deagon (Dennis Haysbert). Through these relationships, shown in the film to be viewed as horrific and deviant, Cathy and Frank learn that love and human relations rarely fit into the pre-carved slots of community approved mores.

Cathy and Frank try desperately to keep control of their worlds and relationships, even try to heal their marriage, but like any good 50s melodrama or noir, shit happens. People spy and towns gossip, strange new femme-fatale-like lovers appear out of nowhere, hearts get broken, and characters learn that despite the humblest of intentions, the world sucks. They follow their hearts’ desires, but while free from the constraints of artifice and conformity, they nevertheless are taken on a whirlwind of depression and antagonism.

Just as the characters are ripped and thrown from their world of aesthetic perfection into one of emotional turmoil, the viewer is shown that under the romanticism of Hollywood and the values it presents, love is beautiful, yes, but also hard, unpredictable, and more importantly, sometimes hated or opposed — thus, love is often impossible to hold on to or even grasp in the first place.

In the end, Cathy and Frank are left in a world suddenly lonely, a future uncertain. And like them, the viewer may long for that past era of Hollywood happy endings and happier families. But, after experiencing the liberating and enlightening events of Far From Heaven, I doubt Cathy, Frank, or any of us would go back if given the choice. For while that world may be prettier, the ignorance it represents is much darker than any noir thriller could ever hope to be.

GROWING ROSES OUT OF CONCRETE – A REVIEW OF “FLOWER & GARNET”

Flower & Garnet is a new Canadian movie written and directed by Keith Behrman. Like most Canadian dramas, Flower & Garnet is a slow paced, character driven film. Moments of silence, contemplation, resolve, and emotional repression fill the story, rather than scenes of violent action or melodramatic wailing. Behrman fills his frame with empty landscapes, fields, drab bedrooms, and unpaved driveways. The characters are equally desolate, and as such, much of the success of the film depends on its actors.

Jane McGregor, as Flower, is able to create a character that is both worldly and naïve, steely yet weak. The always-excellent Callum Keith Rennie, as Ed, spends most of the film simmering below boil—you don’t readily see his pain, but to the actor’s credit, you most definitely feel it. The film’s star and anchor, however, is the amazingly evocative Colin Roberts as Garnet. Only eight years old, Roberts carries the film on his slightly hunched back, his Garnet never once presenting a false moment or missed note.

Sixteen-year old Flower and her eight-year old brother Garnet share a close relationship. After their mother dies when giving birth to Garnet, the siblings develop a close bond to compensate for their emotionally vacant father. Their father, Ed, is still so hurt after eight years of mourning that he is unable to look at Garnet (or anyone else) lovingly, secretly holding in his contempt towards the boy for his wife’s death.

In the absence of a caring father, Flower adopts the role of mother to Garnet. But as Flower approaches adulthood, experiencing puberty, sex, and eventually pregnancy, she begins to concentrate more on her own problems rather than Garnet’s. At Flower’s urging, Ed does his best to participate more in the raising of Garnet despite his own emotional problems.

As her name suggests, Flower is delicate, soft and caring, but like a flower growing towards the sun, she has direction and purpose. On the other hand, like his namesake, Garnet is hard, small, seemingly devoid of warmth, and like a small stone, goes where he is kicked, carried or thrown without protest. But the film succeeds in showing that Flower is naïve and hurting inside just as much as anyone else, despite her apparent maturity and head-on-her-shoulders demeanor, and that Garnet is more sensitive to what goes on around him than people are aware.

The film explores the idea of people of different ages and maturity levels all struggling to be adults. And while some may find the pacing of the film unbearably slow, the message of the film still stands out: we are all fragile inside, and we all need to be taken care of sometimes.

Oh really?!?!?!

MacArthur cracks me up.

I went to work today for six hours, and must have said a total of six words all day. I worked with Tin and Tara and didn't say anything to either of them. I'm still weird with them, I dunno. I did a monster garbage run, cuz apparently Kim took the keys home yesterday by mistake, and so I got to take out yesterday's garbage as well.

There's this one customer who really pisses me off. Cocky fukkin bastard... I wish I knew his name or his drink so I could bitch about him, but oh well.

Bought 8 Mile and Save the Last Dance...couldn't find Flashdance. Whatever, I'll just rent it. I think this essay's actually gonna be decent...now if only I could start writing it...

Got the new YRB with Spike Lee on the cover, and the Asian Cinemas issue of Cineaction. Yay magazines. I love magazines.

Boyakasha! I have nothing to say, but I will post up my movie reviews for anyone who is bored enough to read. I don't know how I feel about them. I think I'm getting too wordy...Too much wordiness, not enough substance. But whatever.

I Hate School

Okay, yeah, I actually finished my MacMedia editorial on time! For once this year...shit, I'm such a crappy editor this time around. I'm missing a board meeting as we speak. But whatever. I really don't seem to fit in with this year's staff. Dan, Suzy, Tim...I miss ya. The office sucks without you. Yes, even Suzy, no matter how much you annoy the fuck out of me sometimes.

I did a late review for "Far From Heaven". It's not bad....actually better than the other slosh I've been writing this year. But fuck, I still have to do that piece for the Excal. I'll do it tonight...after Smallville.

Jimmy, your story's in there. Congratulations buddy, you're a published author.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
So, Christianne slept over at my house the other day. We stayed in the basement guestroom. We've done it before and my parents were none the wiser. But this time, my mom caught us. I think she freaked out. She opened the door and shut it right away...as if she caught us having wild monkey sex or something. But really, we were just sleeping. Haha. Fuck.
Money problems continue...paid off part of my VISA today. Suzanne says Priscilla's having a surprise birthday party..so's there's a gift I have to buy. Plus Blaise's next week. Oh shit, that's the Common concert! Hope he doesn't party on that day. Cuz I ain't missing Common, Talib and Sauks. Sorry Blazej. You know I loves ya though.
I talked to Kimmie last night on MSN....We're not close or anything, but the girl poured her heart out to me. She was talking about school, boys, her friends, her future plans. I feel bad, because a lot of what she's talking about I went through just a few years ago. The growing out of touch with your friends, the sadness, blah blah blah, teenage angst. But still, I feel bad. Kim's a good kid. AND the hardest worker at the store, no matter what the rest of those fuckers say. You know she told me the other day that she thought she was gonna get fired? And I told her there's no way they're gonna fire her cuz she's the hardest fuckkin worker there. But she didn't believe me. That just goes to show how they treat her at the store. (Like shit, if that wasn't clear).
Can you tell I'm still bitter about Starbucks? No? Well how about this...(ahem) fuck you Starbucks. And your assisstant manager too. Ah...that felt good.
-J.
3.24.2003
Mondays...
Kamal, you're a smart kid man. Respect. Fuck, just don't kill anyone, please. I have a feeling we'll all be working for this kid someday--and I don't mean him as a shift-supervisor.
So, I finally finished the 'bleeding-ears' script. I'm not too sure how I feel about the ending, but thanks to Chris for making it better than what it was. Oh, and the title sucks too. f(EARS). Like what? That's the stupidest fuggin title ever. But whatever, that's over and done with. It's actually not that bad, though. Much better than the racism/grocery store shit I wrote a couple of weeks ago. I wouldn't mind filming it one day. I love the scene in the bedroom.
That leaves two essays left, the one that was deferred from last semester, and the Chinese Cinema one. I have no idea what to write about for the latter. The former's cool, but I still have to buy my own copies of 8 Mile, Save the Last Dance, and Flashdance. Man, am I gonna look cool bringing those up to the counter. I really shouldn't be spending money right now either, seeing as I'm so frickin poor. But I dunno...there's something about owning movies (even bad ones...see: my copy of Footloose) that gives me warm tingly feelings.
I saw Dave today. Haven't seen that guy since last semester. I gave him my e-mail address. I dunno, maybe we'll collaborate one day. After me and Kev, of course. Hey Kev, how's it going?
Christianne's coming over later. We're gonna watch "Sullivan's Travels". I like Sturges. Funny guy.
Boring post.
Blah day.
Oh, I bought a pack of smokes today for the first time since New Years. I need em for essay week. Shush, they help.
I think I'll have one right now. Jimmy, I owe you like a whole pack, man.
-J.
The Oscar Blab
So yeah, where to start? First off, hey Suzy, did you catch that Una Mas shout-out from the sound editors of "Chicago" when they were referring to Toronto? Haha, that brought a smile to my face.
But yeah, Holy fucking Michael Moore. It was strange; I was wondering whether or not the Academy would vote for him knowing full well that he would get up there and jump on his soapbox. And kudos to him for doing so. But really, Micheal Moore wins on Oscar for Best Documentary Feature and the whole freaking place gets up on its feet to applause. A win for Michael Moore is a win for Leftist Politics, free speach advocates, and believers in anti-violence, yes? So...there's practically a freakin' standing ovation, but when Moore starts into his Anti-Bush tirade he is met with a cacophony of booing. Virtually no applause. What happened to those who were applauding him just five seconds earlier? Were they really that shocked by his views? Did they not expect him to say that shit? Strange. But I'm glad he mentioned the Dixie Chicks. Moore has always been good at mixing serious topics with humor. Even the way he was saying "Shame on you, Mr. Bush" had me chuckling. The Left could use more people like him.
The second "event" of the evening definetly has to be the win for Adrien Brody. Good for him. I know Christianne was happy. He seems like such a nice, sincere guy. His whole "stop the music" thing was the highlight of the night for me. He got them to stop the music for him, and he talked for a good minute or two after that. Classic.
Julianne Moore was robbed by Nicole Kidman. Nothing against Kidman, but Moore kicked retro-50s ass in "Far From Heaven". That meltdown scene in her dining room with her husband kills the meltdown scene Kidman has at the trainstation in "The Hours". If anything, Kidman should have won for "The Others" last year (which she was perfect in). Effa Moulin Rouge, man.
I feel bad for Scorcese. This dude needs an Oscar. Oh well, at least he lost to an actual director this year (Polanski, who actually deserved it, statutory rape notwithstanding) than to some first-time-director actor like Costner or Redford. Scorcese's gonna end up as one of those tragic Oscar oversights, like Hitchcock, and he will get a special honorary Oscar only after he has retired or he is dead. Maaan, "Dances with Wolves" over "Goodfellas"? Fuck that shit.
Is it me, or does Catherine Zeta-Jones look hotter pregnant than she does normally? Ok, maybe I'm weird. But I didn't dig the way she ignored some of her co-stars on her way to accept the award. Didn't even give a passing glance to John C. O'Reilly, but hugged the guy next to him. Passed by Renee Zellweger. But, oh well. She has an accent. You can always get away with shit like that if you have an accent. So long as its not a Tagalog accent. But seriously, that's one hot-looking pregnant chick.
All in all, a decent Oscars, I have to say. They actually ended on time this year. I was surprised by a couple of the winners, but not dissapointed (except for Kidman). And "Spirited Away" won, so I'm punch-drunk happy. Now if only Gollum was nominated for Best Supporting Actor like he should have been...
Eminem for Best Original Song? Okayplayer's gonna light up tonite...
3.23.2003
I really don't wanna go to work tomorrow morning. This insomnia is killing me. I can't sleep...but then when I finally do get t'snoring, I sleep through my effin alarm clock. I'm really tired too, but I just end up lying on my couch. Eventually I turn on the TV and waste my time watching BET or some shit. BET sucks.
MTV, I'm surprised, is giving really good non-biased war coverage. They're covering all angles, and don't seem to be spinning anything, or presenting the War as spectacle like other stations are doing. I'm surprised. This is the same station that banned a Public Enemy video awhile back for mentioning the name of Mumia Abu-Jamal. Now they're doing really good video-essays on why Bush is full of shit. Ah well...you win some you lose some. But they're also showing stuff on why Iraq is a threat. Like I said..they're covering all angles without favoring a particular angle.
I'll do my best to sleep...
3.22.2003
Shiiiit...
I'm officially wierd, I think. I gotta blog. Whaaaat. Damn, I either have a lot of time on my hands, or a lot of shit on my mind, and I think it's a little bit of both. So where do I start? Why do I feel so self-conscious? Oh well, at least I was smart enough to sign up to this "blogger" stuff and not that "diaryland" crap I was looking at before.
So I have two essays and a screenplay due (woe is me and my two class course-load!), and here I am signing up to bloggers and fictionpress.net. AND I have nothing to write for either of them. Oh yeah, I got a movie review due for the Excal and an editorial due for MacMedia.
For the Excalibur assignment, I got a free pass to go watch "Flower & Garnet", a new Canadian movie coming out soon. I got the VIP treatment...arm chair, coffee table beside me, discount coffee and popcorn. Not bad...maybe the critic stuff is more my league than the actual movie-making.
Whatever. I think I am bored with the blog already!
But I'm always like that. Who am I kidding? I'll probably be back on here tonight.
-J.
