That's right. One day soon, these photogenic individuals will combine powers and make weird looking babies.

I'm choked up here, forreal. Congratulations!

If You Take a Few Steps Back,

squint your left eye, gouge your right eye with a fork, and then sprinkle some thyme on your tongue, you can clearly see that this is picture of John Legend from the show last night.

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

Chris and I took a couple of wrong turns and got sidetracked eating a platter of lobster, but we still made it in time for Legend's set. We couldn't find Mike and Pris and them though. We ended up texting them back and forth but never actually running into them.

Pris' birthday tonight, so I'm gonna miss Alias.

In other news, Kev and I have discovered that we ripped our whole movie off from Saved by the Bell. I'm thinking about throwing in a Sadie's Hawk dance-off, and a few secondary characters: a waiter who does magic tricks, and maybe a teacher character who drones like a robot.

Mtv.Com says Ghostface and MF Doom are working on an album together. After the Common/Kanye collab, this one might just push me over the edge and lead me to my very first hip-hop induced orgasm.

My Fair Nothing

I usually hate musicals -- and this one's musical numbers were especially long and stale. I mean, there wasn't even any dancing and more than half the people were lip-synching. And besides, crusty old bourgeoisie people with big hats and blank stares singing choir-boy flat notes creep the shit out of me.

But I was there with you, Hepburn. And I'll admit I'm a huge fan if you promise not to alert the authorities over at Club Heterosexual. But I am. I was there with you during Breakfast at Tiffany's, contemplating my own case of "the mean reds" and yelling at you when you agreed to marry that tacky rich guy. And I was right there with you during Roman Holiday, when Gregory Peck led you drunk up the staircase and you had no idea what was happening to you -- a sublime metaphor for falling in love for the first time. And yes, I was even there with you during Sabrina, hiding in the giant car garage and creeping at night to the forbidden tennis courts.

And fuck I hate musicals, and I resisted I did, but I was there with you during My Fair Lady, which I saw for the first time last night. You were older and uglier, coarser and funnier and smarter and harder around the edges, and I was there. And I resisted, but then you flipped out and left that old rich bastard and stuck it to the Man. And you sang (sort of) some song about how words suck and how you hate talking and how you wanted someone to *show* you something real, and it all made perfect beautiful sense given the tortures you had just endured -- the barbaric elocution lessons, the inhumane attempts at your assimilation into a uniformly boring manner of appearing and speaking.

And it was all so good for awhile, despite the needlessly long and wholly unnecessary (for a three-hour-long movie) musical numbers, despite the unsettling age difference between you and your suitor, despite the film's apologetic attitude towards misogyny.

Why? Because you left him, you dumb bitch. You stuck it to the bastard. You schooled the yatch on all the shit he thought he was an expert on. You straight punked him, put your bootprint in him, 747ed his phallus and even sang a song about it.

But then? Then you went back.

You went back and made a cutesy face, like the little girl that you weren't anymore, and he sunk into his chair, relaxed, put the newspaper over his face and ended the fucking movie by saying "Now where have my slippers gone?"

You let him end the movie by making you get his slippers! What the hell kind of women-hating bullshit was that? This? This was your happy ending? Fetching slippers for some old fuck who probably couldn't poke you right even if he had cane?

Even Holly Golightly would rearrange your face for letting that shit slide. And Golightly was a whore! Fuck you, My Fair Lady.

Holy Shit Holy Shit Holy Shit

I am, as we speak, downloading the new Fiona Apple. If you don't know, this shit has been sitting on some self in some stupid record company office for months now. I'm geeked. Holy shit. Fiona, I love you deeply, in a creepy, unsettling way.

Here is my track-by-track real time reviews/reactions:

Track 1 "Not About Love":
Holy shit. "It doesn't seem ri-i-i-ight..." Hearing this voice again for so long. She's cutting me with piano. String arrangements are doing crazy, stilted dances in the background. She's riding the beat like a cracked-out Judy Garland. Crack. This is straight crack. "IT'S NOT ABOUT LOVE." Sure it ain't, Apple.

Track 2 "Red Red Red":
This sounds like the old John Brion atmospherics. That's a good thing. She's one of those artists who can spend their whole career making the same song over and over again and it's a fresh wound every time. "Kill, kill, kill, kill...kill myself...." Wow. She's drawling her words over the keys, like pulling her lyrics by rope over a cliff. She sings like I imagine she licks: slow, hard, hungry.

Track 3 "Get Him Back":
This one's got a discernable pattern to it, a rhythm. It's a scary interlude at a depressing square dance. "And you will see my face as I figure how to kill what I cannot catch..." I'm not feeling this one straight off the bat, but maybe because it's just not what I was expecting from her. A lot of the second album was like that for me but eventually I grew to love that one way more than Tidal. The ending floats away on her upper register, high pitched humming, lalala away like pixie smoke.

Track 4 "Better Version of Me":
This one starts quietly and marches in like a parade. "I'm a frightened kind of fickle person; Fighting kind of kicking person." Holy shit. She could blow away any so-called Def Poet like a birthday candle. I can't wait to hear this shit through headphones. My crappy laptop speakers ain't doing these arrangements any favours.

Track 5 "Oh Well":
I was wondering when she would slow down the tempo and ease up on the venom. I'm so tempted to turn this shit up and wake up the family. What she just did with her voice when she said "something awful"...wow. This is intricate soundwriting. The lyrics are standalone poetry. But the way the songwriting and the musical arrangements are so co-ordinated...you don't hear this anymore. Or at least I don't. Oh shit, there she goes. She's rolling her voice; gurgling. I love that. Whoa, she's yelling. Marry me. Torture me.

Track 6 "Oh Sailor":
Okay, it's not done downloading yet. But I'm in love with the title already. Fleeting romance, drifting away across the sea. Oh, okay, here we go: hmmm. My gf could describe this better than I could. The way the piano is going...all off-key. Minor chords? I see the RZA playing this song after a bad breakup (assuming of course the RZA gives a fuck about bad breakups). This is one that I would have on repeat during my depression years. "Oh Sailor why'd you do it? Why'd you do that for? Sayin there's nothing to it?..." She's like some genius depressed child banging a piano, pretending it's someone's face. Long song. It drifts and floats.

Track 7 "Used to Love Him":
Big marching band bass. What are these? Bells? Whoa. She sounds whimsical. She's dancing and everybody is staring. This song is Christmas alone in a closet with the lights out. Sing a Christmas carol to the darkness, this is what you get.

Track 8 "Waltz":
I can picture Fiona personifying her emotions, her regrets and mistakes and making them do pirouettes across her bedroom floor. "And if you don't have a date, celebrate, go sit on the lawn underneath nothing." Whoops. Waltz is cut off. Let's move on.

Okay, downloading problems. Too much traffic or something.

Anyways, Fiona is gangsta. If anyone ever again uses her name in the same sentence as Vanessa Carlton's or whoevers...I will pick their nose with my elbow.

peace.

Five Shades of Sexy

Got the first issue of the new Asian Culture mag, Theme. My first thought was, "What happened to Rice Paper?" My second thought was, "damn, for an Asian into hiphop and film and shit, I'm not nearly as hip as I ought to be..."

With the sudden onset of spring-ier weather, I was all ready to start my new jogging regimen. I really was. But then it snowed again and so instead of jogging I ate some fried chicken and chugged about a litre of chocolate milk.

Apparently I am officially "The Nicest Guy" at the offices of REMG. I hope this means people think I'm actually a nice, decent guy, but I have a sneaking suspicion this is a euphemism for "Creepy Quiet Guy (Who Isn't Nearly as Hip as He Ought to Be...)"

This computer is fucked. (The family computer, not my laptop.) I exorcised all the spyware but the damage has already been done. Shortcuts and links no longer lead where they shoud. Whatever world exists inside of a computer, this one's roads have been burned and convoluted, a tangled effigy in the name of Futurism. (Cue: Simpson's Monorail Song.)

Common's yet-to-be-released new album got the XXL rating in (err...)XXL Magazine. That's dope. I can't wait to hear this shit. Am I incredibly selfish and shallow for wanting Common to blow up of this, but not wanting him to blow-the-fuck-up because I've gotten used to being his number one fan and I don't think I can deal with being just another zombie on the bandwagon?

Somehow, my girlfriend got sidelined into manning a booth at U of T and reading tarot card fortunes. Her clients' reactions were varied -- some blushed, some got nervous, some giddy, and some stalked off unimpressed and somewhat angry. I realize that I am living every hardcore Buffy fan's ultimate fantasy. I am dating some sort of super sexy witch. I am not a hardcore Buffy fan, but still, any sort of sexy is totally fine with me.

Eggshells

As much as it seemed like a good and humorous idea when we came up with it, I really don't wanna use any of the audition footage in a malicious way. I don't wanna poke fun of people who reached out to work on our film. I don't want to present asians who say they've never dated asians in a negative light. It's dishonest. I feel kind of dirty.

This is one piece of a larger puzzle. I'm feeling very cautious lately, like I'm opening a giant crumply bag of chips in a small, snobby film house. Like I'm wearing a giant traveler's backpack and I'm doing the twist through a fine china store.

Like I'm making everybody's life a little shittier just because I happen to be a part of it.

peace.

Fuck the World

There are cars chugging through the streets like
curdled cream through choking throats
they leave delicate smoke trails behind
marking their territory with scent and fluid

These machines will die one day
with one last chug and one last pull
as with everything the gears stop spinning
lifeless to begin with still
we are mad at their inconvenient lifespan

time is a delicate thing with soft hands
and its space is all-welcoming and unforgiving

the universe is a feminine creature:
dark and spacious and round and sensitive

a wet womb that we
shoot rockets through, erect monuments inside of
push poisoned seed deep down into
and pluck bare to satisfy our hungers

We took what was round and perfect and clamped
our praying hands around its temples
squeezed its soft songs into sharp bullet bangs,
towers, teaching sticks,
rocket ships,
silent silos,
millions of middle fingers and
exclamation points.

We scream fuck the world
and flagpole our flaccid impotence in monuments
to our father.

They wave in the air,
passing the time over the rush-hour traffic
as gas prices rise and fall
spilling into everything and
staining the bleach drenched sheets.

peace.

This Week/An Hour of Blogging

Monday
As I was posting on Okayplayer, Lisa swiveled around in her chair and said, "I know you're not actually doing work back there, and it's OK. Honestly, if you have script stuff you need to do you can do it." Greatest job ever.

Spike Lee gave a great speech. Rather than focusing on issues of racial discrimination or even Black issues in general, he spoke about hard work and following your dreams, aligning and surrounding yourself with a solid crew of people who share your vision and your drive, and basically just doing everything you can to do what you want to do with your life.

The Q&A period was whack. Busloads of people one after the other either asking Spike to hook them up or trying to attack the man as if he never did anything to help Black people in his life. The man's a pro. The way he handled these people was a seminar on professionalism and good humor. People skills go a long way.

Saw Suzy's apartment and ate ice cream. Went home with Jessica who fell down and couldn't get up. The Jaravata van has no speedometer. Got attacked by a skunk and ran like a bitch.

Tuesday
Christianne skipped her first class to visit me. I tried to convince her to skip the whole day because she had womanly pains and because I missed her. She skipped two classes but went to the last one. I went to work and met the new girl who was white and applied for an asian role in a movie. She whined and cried when I told her Alice Ayers dies in the play version of Closer. Marites exploded.

Wednesday
Went to Eastgate with Christianne and got salmon teriyaki and taro bubble tea. Met up with her again after school and went to check out Kamal's performance with Iron Crescent at the El Mocombo. The place was pretty empty but the energy was good. The vibe was palpably positive and the souljah chick touched my arm and my heart. Christianne kicked mad freestyles over guitar licks. It's interesting when Chris and I permeate into each other's respective worlds. I find myself eating expensive food, sipping red wine; and there she is in a dingy venue watching a bunch of kids high on weed spit rhymes about how George Bush is a liar.

Thursday
Soliguin smoked me out and we went to the De La show. Crazy shit. Soliguin had a funny trip and thought De La was talking shit to him throughout the whole show. I had a great time thinking that De La was the greatest band to ever exist. Saw Ramos and Tim in the crowd, and felt stupid trying to hide the fact that I was high. Smoking at hiphop shows now feels like smoking at work. I want De La's entire back catalogue like now.

Friday
Helped Chris return her shit to Toshiba. What a shitty job it turned out to be, I'm glad she quit. We went on a journey to the giant Vaughn Mills shopping mall. I'm not a communist (despite what MacArthur says) but extreme monuments of capitalism are weird. Shopping as recreation. The thrill of the sale. I'm far from innocent, but it's rare that I get to see it exaggerated to this scale. Anyways, I bought some notebooks at the dollar store and some bubble tea. Largest mall in Ontario and I buy notebooks from the dollar store.

Went to work. Bad mood instantly once I step onto the floor. Desperately in need of a beer. I went out with Tony and Kim and the loser customers afterwards to Jack's. Not because I wanted to, but because I was starving and had no food at home. Ate my shit and bounced.

Saturday
Audition day. Wow. Saw a lot of great people and the energy was almost overwhelming. Actually making a film is a lot different from sitting at home and writing one. Rohan came to help out and I owe him one. Met Kev's friend who was really funny and knew a lot of tech stuff (well...compared to me at least). Got lost on the way up even though both Rohan and I go to York, and had to deal with some ridiculous Tim Horton's language barrier, but all turned out well. Have to to hand it to Kev on this one. He really pulled everything together nicely.

Had smokes with Kev and Rohan and felt like a big loser because I seem to have forgotten how to smoke. That year of hard work wasted.

Went out for drinks with Rohan and talked philosophy and movies. So cliche, lol. Missed Emelynne's birthday; too tired.

Sunday
Slept alot. Watched Batman. Wrote. Read. Ate some Bagel.

The Silence of the Jams

Was reading the paper today and in the Ideas section there was a think-piece on the topic of solitude. My solitude cock is one that I generally perceive to be bigger than everyone else's. I meditate, I go to films and coffee shops by myself, I take long romantic walks hand in hand with my disc(wo)man. The article was an egostroke; holding me above the masses as smarter and psychologically healthier.

But then they came to part about people and their iPods and discmans. I immediately jumped to the defensive, mounting walls of "they don't understand music" and laying down moats of "music is essential to the soul".

I stood my ground for a couple of paragraphs, but the problem with think-pieces is that they've done all the thinking already. They pulled the trump card and I was stumped: "In effect, iPods create an artificial solitude that separates the listener from others but also protects them from being alone with themselves and their thoughts. iPods empower you to construct the world as you want, and other people may not be part of it. Often people with iPods never initiate interaction -- they're too busy listening"

I was holding strong until that last part that I bolded. It's no secret that I've been carrying around some sort of portable music device ever since grade school. You can tell by the way I constantly ask "Huh? What did you say?" that my eardrums have been whittled away by a steady stream of bass and beats over the years.

And it's true: I listen instead of talking. I watch instead of interacting. I'm tired of not knowing how to "initiate interaction[s]".

I'm packing away the discman for awhile. I'll see how it goes, and actually hear it for once too.

peace.

Feels like York

From the corner of my eye if I'm not focusing properly, the word heroes can look a lot like the word herpes. Extrapolating, a comic book might appear to contain the phrase SUPER HERPES AT YOUR FRONT DOOR.

This was one of my laziest days since the days of York. I came home from work and didn't even bother with lunch. Christianne came over and I fell asleep on her, woke up to watch the new Ciara video, and then passed out again for a couple of hours. She was gone when I woke up.

I wrote for a bit but then stopped. Chris came back after school and I watched Millenium Actress while she slept. Exciting stuff.

I think I've lost the writing drive for the time being. Well, drive in general. I wasn't fucking with any REMG shit today either. Pizza-Shock misses its deadline, once again.

What a shitty week, motivation-wise.

Salem ran away again today. It was mad cold outside and it's a good thing she came back. Dogs are all emotion and no thought. They are very much Romantics, swaying to their hearts desire, destined to die a tragic death at the height of some extreme weather pattern, noses wet, bodies shivering.

Two blogs in a row end on mention of dogs. Weird.

peace.

Z

How does that old scenario go? Put a monkey in front of typewriter and see how long it takes for her (I'm a feminist) to serendipitously type out A Tale of Two Cities?

Statistically, it's supposed to be possible. Assuming of course you can find an immortal monkey with a fetish for hand-to-typewriter interactions. Anything else would be akin to torture and I think the presence of torture kind of negates the whole idea of serendipity.

I don't know about monkeys and literature and torture, aside from the shared link they probably share with Tim Burton, but I do know that I was walking home yesterday from work and I saw the piss-stain left by some dog: a perfect, flawless "Z". Now tell me the chances of some random dog duplicating the mark of Zorro in front of my house? Word to that. Such are the signs that send fortune tellers running through the streets screaming and reeking of morning breath.

And that fortune teller would have been correct, too. Strange, wonderful happenstances were to come just days after that dog took a swashbuckling twinkle on my lawn.

First off, I received an e-mail from Chuck D today. That's right, Chuck muthafunking D from Public freakin' Enemy. Whoooo. Addressed to me and all. Second, Lisa Ray applied to be in our movie. Lisa Ray, the stunning beauty from that crappy, artless spool of celluloid called Bollywood/Hollywood.

Of course, Chuck never really says anything of substance or anything directly related to me. And of course, we're gonna have to turn down Ms. Ray because she doesn't fit the part and we have no way of accomodating someone of her status, but still.

Went down to the library to meet up with Christianne, and I found a collection of criticism by Paulien Kael for a dollar. A dollar! Kael is my favorite film critic (rest in peace), and I've always wanted to buy a volume of her work. She had the perfect balance of theory and personal passion, and I've spent the last little while attempting to follow in her footsteps. Of all the critics I've read, she was the most relevant, and by that I mean relevant at its most basic and essential meaning: what she wrote about movies applied to our daily lives as human beings.

Oh, and then my gf took me out for Popeye's Chicken, which I've been craving for what feels like my whole life.

Whoever owns that dog, give him a kiss for me. I'd kiss him myself but I just talked about his penis and that would just make the whole situation awkward.

Now With Rap Quotes!

My own rap quotes, btw. Circa first year University.

As for the present day, I think what concerns me is my lack of foresight. I ran into some problems this week that I should have seen coming. Even a brick wall in the middle of the desert, as erroneously placed as it is, you should see coming.

"...they keep chasing me, they keep chasing me, swallow the pills followed with bullshit, they're chasing me..."

The festival had been going so well I got caught up in my own momentum. I was brought back down to reality this week by a number of ankle weights, among them being Jonathon not wanting to deal with Will Strickland and me having to brush him off, me dancing through various hoops with increasingly high degrees of style in order to secure Tragedy and then having the director tell me about distribution problems, everybody seeming to flake on me and not respond to my call for another screening night, and me sending off an incomplete contract to the makers of Jails, Hospitals and Hip-Hop, leaving me hoping I'm not in legal trouble for having someone sign a contract without sending them the full document.

"...because I'm mad frustrated inundated with this lifestyle.."

Kev and I got into it the past few days. Tension is high and I think we both need someone to unleash on. Like the married couple we are, we unleash on each other. There's more to it than that of course, there's real problems concerning our work habits and separate vision...but so far stuff has been working out as best it can. The bottom line still is, though, Kev won't be assuaged until he can reach me more, and I, frankly, will not be able to provide that. So I'm guessing this is the first of many fights, which really though, considering I am a screenwriter and he is a director, is pretty normal. As Lynn, our single-grande-extra-hot-latte regular customer who is a screenwriter/producer, told me: "Everybody hates the screenwriter. Everybody." One look into Lynn's droopy-dog face and tired smile, and I knew she was speaking from experience. Which kind of depresses me, because I already have a wrinkled brow and a strained smile, so how much uglier am I gonna get from this shit?

"...I wanna scream fuck the world, but I can't get it up..."

I organized a Tsunami Relief "Work-for-Free" Day at the Bux, and all I needed was for One-Eyed-Godin to look up the pay info and tell me how much everybody needs to donate. He riverdanced around my constant-nagging and eventually disappeared into a cloud of evil leprechaun smoke. Normally I wouldn't care, but he was the one who told me he would get the info to me. Nothing's worse than a lying leprechaun. They're ugly and have no gold. He shows up at the store yesterday with his band of losers (aka "Stich and Bitch", and I'm not being mean, they actually gave that name to themselves, erecting a towering tribute to their own lameosity) and a baseball cap, and once again manages to dodgeball me. When "dodgeball" is used as a verb it relates to ones ability to both evade someone and hit them in the balls at the same time.

"...Yo, this is Remy Lebeau, taking lyrical Gambits, feeding me beef so you're getting your hand bit..."

My laptop, my infinity gauntlet, my precious, has finally encountered problems. I'm still not sure what's up, whether it's a virus or some disk error, or maybe some errors caused by the viruses I "deleted"...I dunno. But I do know it's freezing every once inawhile. Which maybe is normal for most computers, but my laptop has never froze before. It's like watching a baby sleep and realizing its not breathing. Is it holding its breath?? And then it exhales but you're still uneasy.

"...leave you gassed with a flask in your ass, this is science..."

Went to the mall with my gf and encountered about twenty hundred mofos trynna sleep with her. That's all I have to say about that. And the bubble tea sucked too. I've been so mad busy that I'm not seeing my gf as much as I'd like. And when I do see her I often fall asleep or bitch about work and shit. The worst thing in the world is telling Christianne that you can't see her because you have to get some writing done, and watching her big eyes drift to the side and then sink to the floor.

"...when every page reads rage, i flip more than my ehtnicity..."

peace.

Tron 2: Tronto

All I wanted to do was chill at a Second Cup with a latte and soak up their free wireless. Instead, I've spent the last three hours or so vexed with one problem or another. Connection problems, viruses (which I'm still suspicious aren't viruses, but my virus checker fucking shit up...), etc. Things are running fine right now, but I've just noticed that my laptop for some reason isn't recognizing my adapter. I restarted and it's the same shit. And now my battery is draining. It's like my laptop is moving in to second base with Rogue, its powers slowly being sucked away. Maybe this has something to do with the viruses I "deleted". Maybe my adapter's fucked. Maybe Second Cup sucks and should die like bad, bubbly foam.

Other than that though, the day has been productive. I met up with Mohit from the CBC this morning, and talking with him has calmed a lot of my previously coiled, tensed nerves. He broke out some paper and was drawing graphs and flow charts, breaking down the ins, outs, ups and downs of film festival programming. I'm so glad we have this guy as a consultant.

Dropped by REMG to replace the file I borrowed. It was exactly the first time I walked into that place with any sort of confidence on my face and hanging off my shoulders, as if I actually worked there and were a part of the team. It helps that my name has somehow changed from "intern" to "festival programmer". It's all smoke and mirrors, a costume used to fool people into thinking I'm more impressive than I actually am, but who cares.

I'm supposed to be working on the script right now, but my frustrations with technology have eclipsed any creative thinking I planned on doing today. Soon my gf will be a big tech-head and so I'll have her, Kev, and my dad to help me whenever I have beef with a gang of computer chips. Until then I'm James Dean in Rebel Without a Cause, waving a tiny knife at countless problems, not knowing which to cut and what good it will do anyways.

For now:

peace.
